An initiative of South West Victorian SEAL Inc in conjunction with Matchworks, 15 participants have produced the book over the past five months as part of a work for the dole program.
SEAL Inc executive officer Debra Dumesny said the cookbook, titled Let’s Get Cooking, focuses on budget, healthy cooking, with some treats.
“There are hints and tips on shopping and cooking, a seasonal food guide and an explanation to some of the cuts of meat,” she said.
“It is suitable for someone who is trying to look at a cheaper and healthier lifestyle.”
The 100-page cook book will be distributed through support agencies and Warrnambool Food Share.
The book will be free, but if anyone wishes to contribute a small donation, the money will be forwarded to Warrnambool Food Share.
Everything in the cook book we have made in the SEAL Inc kitchen. All recipes have been tested, some more than once

Program supervisor Brad Huxley, who has been a chef for more than 30 years, said the initiative had taught the participants how to cook budget friendly meals.
“Everything in the cook book we have made in the SEAL Inc kitchen,” he said.
“All recipes have been tested, some more than once. It’s good to teach other people skills and build their confidence.”
The group who produced the cook book practised cooking the recipes for staff meetings and the SEAL centenary. Ms Dumesny said the program had been incredibly successful.
“This has been a very worthwhile project for those who took part,” she said.
“The increase in confidence and the overall feeling of making a solid contribution to our community are the main benefits.
“We have seen all the participants gain skills that they can take to a prospective employer – not only technical skills for work in a kitchen, but more importantly those interpersonal skills that will make them better employees.”
The cook book will be launched on Friday, January 15 at 2.30pm at 71 Hyland Street, Warrnambool.
