A SOUTH Australian man will be given a penalty notice after his LandCruiser allegedly slammed into the back of a ute at Nullawarre.
Police said a white ute travelling south had stopped to give way and turn onto the Childers Cove Road from the Great Ocean Road at Naylors Corner yesterday when the grey LandCruiser hit the back of the ute, forcing it into the path of an oncoming Toyota Hilux.
A 70-year-old man from Kolora was driving the white ute and taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the LandCruiser, a 40-year-old man from Penong, which was towing a caravan and the driver of the Hilux, a 33-year-old man from Nirranda, which was towing a trailer, were not injured.
Leading Senior Cons-table Dean Owen, from Warrnambool highway patrol, said it was lucky more people, including the wife of the man in the Land Cruiser and four children, were not injured.
“It’s a bad corner and I’ve been to a few accidents here where there have been injuries,” he said. “It’s usually because of driver error where people have failed to obey the signs.”
Nullawarre resident Sandra Bushell said it was a notorious section of road to locals.
“It’s an extremely dangerous corner and needs some urgent attention before someone is seriously injured, or worse,” she said.
“We’ve seen many accidents here over a period of years.”
