Car stolen and torched near Wollaston Bridge

WARRNAMBOOL police are seeking information after a stolen car was set alight near the Wollaston Bridge at 5am yesterday morning.

Detective Senior Constable Damian Coutts, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said the owner of the blue 2005 Holden sedan discovered it was missing from his Williams Lane address when he got up to go to work at 5am.

He reported it stolen to police and about the same time a fire was reported to the Warrnambool fire brigade of a car burning near the Wollaston bridge.

Detective Senior Constable Coutts said the car had been parked on a 45 degree angle near the bridge and it appeared someone had tried to push it into the river.

"The vehicle has hit a stump of something similar and got stuck on the bank. It is believed an accelerant of some sort was then used to start a fire which completely destroyed the vehicle," he said.

"A resident noticed a glow, had a look... and reported the fire to emergency services. He saw a vehicle parked on the bridge at that time and we suspect that was the getaway car."

Detective Senior Constable Coutts called on anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Wollaston Road or Williams Lane areas to contacted the Warrnambool police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
