IT has been a story 140 years in the making and now it is ready to be told with a new exhibition showcasing the history of the region and the newspaper that records it.
This year The Standard celebrates its 140th anniversary, a milestone that few regional newspapers in Australia can match.
To celebrate, The Standard and Warrnambool Art Gallery have collaborated on a stunning exhibition that opens today.
A timeline of events over the past 140 years marks the evolution of the paper from its earliest years to the high-tech, digital entity it is now.
The exhibition is also a celebration of the community and the paper's readers.
"The newspaper has walked side by side with the community through all its tribulations," gallery director John Cunningham said.
"It is the go-to thing.
"We have taken stories (for the exhibition), some tragic, some triumphant, some day to day."
The timeline is brought alive with copies of The Standard news stories and multi-media presentations including photographs, historical footage and a documentary on the production of The Standard that interviews staff.
Mr Cunningham said the exhibition also reflected the changing nature of the media since The Standard began in 1872.
Artefacts such as cameras and printing plates reflect that change, showing the evolution from hot metal to digital.
Mr Cunningham said the exhibition also showed how the use of the English language had changed, how The Standard had changed physically in its shape and the changes in news priorities it gave to events.
The Standard's 15th editor Steve Kelly urged anyone with even a passing interest in their community to visit the exhibition.
"Of course, it is about the newspaper but it is equally about this wonderful region and its magnificent story," Mr Kelly said.
The Standard's video collection on our website continues to grow, and now you can view these clips on the newspaper's iPhone app.
