A teenage golfer with a bright future teamed up with two veterans of the sport to win a sought-after Warrnambool golf title.
Alana Ellery, 15, combined with her grandmother Joan Jacobsen and Di Howland to win Warrnambool Golf Club’s Centenary Cup.
The trio posted a score of 57 during the 3BBB event to top the 31-team field.
The Centenary Cup started in 1995 as part of Warrnambool Golf Club celebrations.
It is one of the most sought-after events on the women’s calendar and attracts players from across south-west Victoria.
Howland said she and Jacobsen were part of a team which won the inaugural event in ’95, and backed up again last week.
She praised Alana’s efforts, saying she had a big future on the course.
“Alana had some really good holes,” she said.
“But we all put in. We all had good holes.”
Howland, who plays off 11, is also the reigning Warrnambool Golf Club women’s champion.
She will defend her crown when the titles get under way on October 17, but considered herself an outsider to go back-to-back.
“I actually won it last year but I don’t think I’ll do it this year. I was lucky,” she said.
Warrnambool Golf Club women’s captain Rosemary Walters said the Centenary Cup benefited from “perfect” weather. “It was absolutely beautiful, and the course was lovely as well,” she said.
“It’s recovered from that last lot of wet weather. It was absolutely superb.”
