Rain and strong winds made for testing conditions in round seven matches.
The highlight of the round was a thrilling 75-75 draw between City Memorial Gold and Port Fairy Gold.
On its home green, City Memorial Gold went into the game in third place and favourites against Port Fairy Gold who sat on the bottom of the ladder.
But the visitors came ready to play with a 32-21 win to Gill Phillips’ rink the best result.
For City Memorial Gold, Dorothy Gleeson won her rink 25-23 and Kay Maddern had a 29-20 victory.
Port Fairy Gold lead Alicia Drew said it was a pleasing result.
“It was a good effort to draw with one of the top teams,” Drew said.
“The conditions did work in our favour, it’s a bit like playing footy in the rain, it does give the underdog a better chance.
“I think we are improving each week, I’m pretty optimistic about the rest of the year.”
This is the first season Drew has played division one having been part of the Port Fairy team that claimed the division three title last year.
At 29, she is one of the younger players at the competition.
Her youth, combined with pink shoes and tattoos, have made her one of the most recognisable players despite this being her debut season.
“The girls have been great, I keep them on their toes and they keep me honest,” Drew said.
“I am enjoying the chance to play division one, there is a lot more pressure.
“It is a massive step-up but everyone has been very patient and helping me improve my game.
“My aim is to stay relaxed, that’s when I seem to play better.”
Top team Warrnambool Gold continued on its merry way with a 87-43 win over Koroit Orange.
In a dominant display, Warrnambool Gold won the three rinks with Maree Lynch producing the most impressive performance, winning 40-10.
Timboon Maroon showed it is a contender with a 69-60 victory on its home green over second-placed City Memorial Green.
Betty Russell led her rink to a 29-18 triumph and Noelene Richards won 23-14 to set up the day for the home team.
Terang Gold won all three rinks in its comfortable 77-56 triumph over Warrnambool Blue.
The win has Terang Gold in fifth place and within striking range of the top four, just three points away.
