The Victorian Local Government Annual Waste Services Survey ranks Corangamite fifth out of the state’s 79 councils.
Corangamite Shire environment and emergency manager Lyall Bond said the region’s households had increased recycling diversion figures to almost 65 per cent, when transfer stations were included – well above the state average of 49 per cent.
Diversion rates are calculated through the amount of waste recycled and therefore diverted from landfill.
Mr Bond said residents should be proud of their achievements, but there is still room for improvement.
“Some of the common mistakes include bagging recyclables or disposing of cooked leftovers and packaged food in the general waste bin, so I encourage residents to use their green bin to dispose of organic waste,” he said.
