Expressions of interest (EOI) are open for the project, which aims to “unearth hidden knowledge and stories from the local environment (with) connection to stories from the Gunditjmara people”.
Suggested themes include “lesser-known aspects of flora and fauna, geology, astronomy, history, and culture of the region”.
A preference is for artists who work in natural materials and can run workshops during the artwork’s development to help grow the number of the sculptors in the region capable of creating large-scale artworks.
A similar process proved successful with artists creating large-scale murals in Warrnambool, where the artists passed on their tips and skills to fellow artists as they worked, increasing the number of people able to make bigger pieces.
Further info on the sculpture project can be gained from gcolliton@warrnambool.vic.gov.au and EOIs must be sent to the same address by December 7.
The project is a partnership between participants of the Leadership Great South Coast program, F Project, and the WAG.
The sculpture is expected to be completed by March 2016.
