SUMMER is just a few days away, so it’s perfect timing to run this photo, which is another great example of the adage “the more things change, the more they stay the same”.

The belly-button-high bathers have fallen out of fashion, but a day at the beach with your mates remains popular over 70 years after this photo was taken.
The names of the pictured men are written on the back and are as follows: (from left) Ken Twaddle, Jim Lawrence, Laurie Murnane, Don Somervaille, Bob Harper, and Jack Pearce. The back of the photo also bears the inscription “W’bool beach, 1938”.
The lads in the picture are all smiles, but the date on the back is an ominous one – it’s possible some of these men heeded the call to defend King and country in the years that followed.
It’s also possible some of these men are still around. Can anyone shed any light on the fate of these gents? Email mneal@fairfaxmedia.com.au and tell us what you know.
