Bulls captain Dave Murphy admitted there was a “bit of an unknown” regarding the team’s fortunes heading into the season with a number of new faces around the club. But any uncertainty was soon put to rest.
A 40-run win over neighbouring Camperdown last weekend launched Pomborneit into top position on the ladder.
The Bulls will look to solidify their position with a win when they host Heytesbury Rebels on Saturday.
It is a far cry from the team which won just three of eight matches in the pre-Christmas block last year, before eventually finishing sixth.
“There’s massive improvement on last season,” Murphy said.
“There’s a few different blokes in the side this year compared to last year; it was a bit of an unknown at the start of the season how we’d go.
“But these guys have fitted in the side really well and probably changed the dynamic of our bowling attack.”
Peter Boyd, from Colac, has stepped up to the division one side the past two weeks and taken three wickets on both occasions, while Jake Boyle is returning from a couple of years off and Tyson Dridon is shaping as another asset.
The only blemish on the Bulls’ season to date was a 15-run loss to Bookaar in round two, but they have a stern challenge ahead of them, given the Rebels’ prowess with the bat.
Travis Brown and Chris Dendle have both made centuries this season, but the Bulls will look to counter them with their top order batsmen Murphy, Tim Place, Grant Place and Matthew Bignell.
In other division one matches, Cobden hosts Mortlake at Cobden Technical School, Noorat and Terang meet at Noorat and Camperdown plays Bookaar at Camperdown Turf.
