Very good numbers of entries have been received for the competition to be held at Warrnambool Bowls Club. In all 30 teams will compete in a knockout event throughout the day and the following weeks.
Last Sunday Mortlake Bowls Club completed their men’s championship pairs event. George Draffen and teammate Merv Lynam had a resounding win over Paul Delaney and Cliff Kenshole 24-6. The Mortlake ladies A grade singles final was played on Wednesday morning between Val Smith and Ann Van Diemen with Van Diemen triumphant 25–9.
I have noticed a lot of the clubs have caught up with the 21st Century. Warrnambool Bowls Club has its own website, Facebook page and now a team app.
Warrnambool’s A grade men’s singles championship is down to the last eight. The event has been played over the past few Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.
The division board received a letter asking for clarification of the procedure to be adopted in relation to club uniform not being worn by an opposing player in pennant. The board has indicated that it would not want to see players questioned about minor details of their dress as we are all about encouraging people to participate in this great game. The general compliance of uniform issues is the responsibility of the club presidents. On the more serious end of the scale, if a person refuses to wear a registered club uniform in pennant this should be bought to the attention of the managers and a formal complaint can then be lodged with the board. A forfeit of a match could be the ultimate result.
Another reminder on rules relates to the use of communication devices and/or similar sound devices such as mobile phones,iPods and iPads. These items are not permitted to be used on the green. Medical or emergency personnel that may have a legitimate reason for answering a mobile phone must leave the phone in their bowls bag or with a spectator on the bank. If a player is observed to be using a mobile phone or other sound device on the green by the umpire a warning shall be given. If the player is observed by the umpire on a second occasion to be using a mobile phone or sound device the umpire shall immediately suspend that player for the remainder of the day. No replacement or substitute player will be allowed for the team.
A reminder to all division clubs to keep the information coming into me so we can continue with this column.
