The team will feature a mix of players from clubs and schools in the Waves region, selected from recent Super 8s competitions and a training day, and will take on country and metropolitan teams in the three-day tournament, which will run from January 13-15.
South-west cricketers Maddison Locke, Chloe McKenzie (Warrnambool), Jacque Dickson (Terang), Ingrid Bellman (Cobden), Grace Farrer (Panmure), Shae Defrancesco and Kaitlyn Fowler (Mortlake) were named in the squad.
Ruby Lang (Hamilton), Gemma Ross (Portland), Ruby James (Nhill), Lori Young, Maddi O’Bryan (Minyip) and Claire Logan (Macarthur) round out the squad.
Each team will play four Twenty20 matches across the first two days of the championships, before finals and rankings matches on the last day of competition.
Lachie Green, who will coach the Waves team, said he expected their bowling would be a strength with most of the list able to bowl.
“We’ve also got Grace Farrer from Panmure (who) is an exceptional talent. She bowls very fast for her age,” he said.
Green said the 2016 Waves side would have a different look to the one that got within three runs of making the preliminary final last summer.
The Waves’ under 16 and under 18 female state championship squads are expected to be announced later this week.
