Police are investigating an attempted burglary at the Koroit IGA Supermarket and a burglary and theft of alcohol and a charity tin from the Commercial Road hotel between 1am and 2am.
Koroit police Sergeant Pat Day said the Warrnambool crime scene unit and police spent Wednesday combing for evidence at both sites.
Sergeant Day said the offender or offenders attempted to jemmy open the supermarket’s front door. When unsuccessful, the front glass of the door was smashed in another attempt to gain access.
A ventilation screen at the side of the supermarket was also jemmied off in attempt to get into the rear of the store. Both were unsuccessful and entry was not gained.
Koroit IGA part owner Mick Daly said the call out cost to replace the small glass panel in the front door was unknown.
“It’s the damage and the time taken to repair it when it happens,” he said.
Mr Daly believed the offenders were amateurs looking for easy access.
“They didn’t get in. We were deadlocked and alarmed,” Mr Daly said.
Sergeant Day said about the same time, a side window at the hotel was forced open.
Entry was gained and a small amount of alcohol and a Royal Children’s Hospital charity donation tin were stolen, along with some loose change from the cash register.
Sergeant Day appealed for witnesses to contact police with any information.
“We believe the same person is responsible for both. We would like to hear from anyone, particularly any of the tanker drivers or residents, who may have seen anyone in the main street around this time,” Sergeant Day said.
