In Western District Bowls Division Tuesday pennant yesterday Warrnambool Gold went down to City Memorial Gold 69-67.
Warrnambool Gold has toppled from top spot on the ladder after the loss, replaced by City Memorial Green who had a big 98-44 win over Warrnambool Blue.
The win for City Memorial Gold has steadied it in third place and confirmed its standing as a genuine premiership contender after five rounds.
Little separated the two Gold teams in the match of the round at City Memorial.
The rink skippered by City Memorial Gold’s Dorothy Gleeson and Warrnambool Gold’s Helen Lock was a fiercely contested one with neither team able to break free, ending in a 19-19 tie.
Warrnambool Gold’s Brenda Hawker led her rink to a 29-22 win but it was a brilliant showing from Barbara Bibby and her rink that got City Memorial Gold over the line. Bibby’s rink won 28-19, giving her team a winning margin of two shots at the end of play.
Bibby said the win was a welcome outcome.
“We went into the game hoping to make a real contest of it,” Bibby said.
“Luckily we were able to do that and get the win in a close match.
“Our rink was down 19-17 at one stage so it was a really good finish and Dorothy was down by, I think it was 10 shots, at lunch so to get the draw was a great effort.
“In the other rink Kaye Maddern played a brilliant shot on the last end which helped us hold on for the win.”
On the losing side, Hawker acknowledged both teams had played solid bowls.
“It was a tight game all the way through, a very hard fought match,” Hawker said.
“The conditions were tough to play in, the wind was strong which made it hard to read.
“Full credit to City Memorial Gold, they played well and deserved the win.”
Timboon Maroon has stepped up into the top half of the ladder, now fitting nicely into fourth place, jumping up from fifth.
This climb came thanks to a 83-67 win over Port Fairy Gold.
For the winners, the rink led by Corrie Dixon was the most important, dominating play to come out with a 35-10 result.
Koroit Orange continue to be competitive in its return to division one, its latest outing producing a 63-63 draw against Terang Gold.
On its home green, Terang Gold manged to triumph in two of the three rinks.
But Koroit Orange was able to stay in the match and tie it up with a 27-16 win to Faye Bolden’s rink.
