Speedy utility Charlie Lee was named on the AFL’s permission to train list on Wednesday – just two weeks out from the national and rookie drafts.
The North Ballarat Rebels-listed teenager said he was excited to test at the Western Bulldogs.
But he played down his chances of getting drafted in a fortnight.
“They give nothing away, so I have no idea,” he said.
“If it doesn’t happen, I’ve got next year I guess.”
The Emmanuel College student joined North Ballarat Rebels in 2015 as a top-age prospect.
He was selected after a promising season at South Warrnambool which included a four-goal effort on debut at senior level.
Lee, 18, labelled his first year in the TAC Cup system inconsistent.
He played a mixture of wing and forward before being moved into unfamiliar territory in the back line where he showed promise as a rebounding defender.
“That was mid-season and I had a few good games there,” Lee said.
“It was different. You have to worry about the ball but also your man as well.”
We knew he could run so we tried to develop him in different positions to showcase what he can do
- Phil Partington
North Ballarat Rebels talent manager Phil Partington said the chance to test at the Western Bulldogs was a great opportunity for Lee.
He said the Rebels would invite him back as a 19-year-old in 2016 if he was overlooked in the drafts.
“He has great speed and athletic attributes but we don’t see it enough at the moment,” Partington said.
“We have invited him back as a 19-year-old at the Rebels.
“A second year in the program would be good for him, get more consistency out of him.”
Partington said the decision to play Lee in defence was made to fast-track his development.
“We knew he could run so we tried to develop him in different positions to showcase what he can do,” he said.
“He’d played all his football as a wingman or at half-forward.”
The AFL national draft is on November 24 with powerful defender Jacob Weitering expected to land at Carlton with the first pick. The rookie draft will follow on the Friday morning.
