Cobden’s Jason Chuck failed to finish the Kathmandu 24-Hour adventure race on the weekend — but he certainly got the taste for the gruelling sport.
Mr Chuck, 30, and his race partner Stewart Lyle pulled out after about 14 hours when Lyle fell ill. He said Mr Lyle, of north Queensland, had carried a cold into the event and his health deteriorated about 10pm when the temperature fell.
“We were about half way through the course,” Chuck said. “We decided discretion was the better part of valour.”
The duo had begun the event, held near Forster in northern NSW, about 8am on Saturday and had completed about 16 kilometres of rogaining, which involves long-distance cross-country navigation, about nine kilometres of kayaking and about 40 kilometres of mountain biking.
Mr Chuck said he and Mr Lyle had been apprehensive about the night navigation aspect of the rogaining segment but had been making good progress in the dark before deciding to withdraw.
The Kathmandu 24-Hour was the first adventure race for Mr Chuck, a seasoned ironman triathlon competitor. He said the event had “hooked” he and Mr Lyle and they were looking for another event to test themselves in.
