Men’s quarter-finals see John Murnane against Koroit clubmate Les Johnson, Kevin Carlin against fellow Warrnambool bowler Barry Crimmin, Warrnambool pair Michael Steel and Bill Tory up against each other, and Scott Boschen (Koroit) against Hank Pelgrim (City Memorial).
On day one, on November 1, wind made conditions difficult, particularly on the top green.
Most interest was seen in Michael Steel’s three close matches.
In the second a brave shot at 24-22 down gained him a three for a victory over Ian Quigley.
He then went to an early lead against David Wells and held on for a 25-20 victory in a very high quality match.
The women only played three matches on day one. Their semi-finals will see Maree Lynch (Warrnambool) against Kellie Bowles (Koroit), and Diane Mugavin (Warrnambool) against Gayle Taylor (Dennington).
The break created by the Bowls Victoria requirement that we do not play division events against the Victorian Open was welcomed by some, but others have questioned the need to suspend pennant when only a handful of our players go to the Victorian Open – a reaction also heard from some other divisions.
News from our representatives at the Open was of better weather this year, but little success in play.
Last year’s mixed pairs winners Scott Boschen and Kellie Bowles won their section but went out early in the knockout rounds.
In club news, Port Fairy completed its club championships last Sunday. Lyn Harris defeated Jenny Blackmore to take the ladies’ event. Alan Parker won the men’s final in a high standard game against Pat Leddin.
Lawn Tennis recently completed two of its championship events – 100 up winners were Cathie Finn over Sandra Suridge, and Maurice Kelly over Colin Fisher.
The club championship finals saw two wins from 23-all, with Bill Dooley defeating defending champion Robert Prout, and Marj Fisher defeating Doreen Prout to claim her sixth club championship.
City Memorial ladies completed its club championship recently. Kate Lloyd continued her winning run, defeating Julie Dosser in the final to become City Memorial’s women’s club champion.
With this form Lloyd should have a good chance of further success on Sunday as one of our six division players to enter the West Coast Region women’s novice singles championship at Camperdown.
WDBD also has four entries for the men’s event.
