A man is in critical condition after being struck by lightning while surfing near Byron Bay on the NSW north coast on Sunday morning.

The man was in the water at Suffolk Park, south of Byron Bay, when he was hit.
Ambulance Service of NSW paramedics treated the man at the scene before taking him to the Tweed Hospital in a critical condition.
The man, believed to be aged in his 30s, was surfing with friends who brought him into shore after he was struck.
His injury comes two weeks after two women were struck by lightning in Sydney. Last month a woman was hit at St Marys and taken to Nepean Hospital while a second woman was struck in Newtown and treated at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
