Shane Threlfall has signed on a senior coach with Shane Quick to work as chairman of selectors.
Threlfall arrives at the Blues following a two-year break from coaching, having spent the previous five seasons at Hampden league clubs Port Fairy and Terang Mortlake.
Quick joins from Terang Mortlake, where he worked as under 18 mentor.
Threlfall said he was excited to return to the coaching hot seat.
“Having a couple of years off has given me a chance to have a bit of a break but it (coaching) is never out of your system,” he said.
“The cut and thrust of match-day is always exciting and clubs are a great place to be around. You miss that camaraderie.”
Threlfall’s appointment at Nirranda signals his first foray into the Warrnambool and District league.
“I’ve always been involved in Hampden league. I love the Hampden league but this is an opportunity to see another league, different opposition and see how a different league operates,” he said.
The Warrnambool-based teacher said the chance to coach an outlying club also appealed to him.
“I was at Derrinallum for a long time and they (the Blues) remind me of them,” Threlfall said.
“Small communities really get behind their sporting clubs, particularly their footy clubs.”
Nirranda missed out on finals on percentage in 2015 under coach Aidan Cole.
Threlfall said the Blues had a talented young list capable of taking the next step and having midfielder Nathan Couch sign on again as an assistant would prove invaluable.
“He has local knowledge and knows the list, so that will help a lot,” he said.
Nirranda president Anthony Foster said the Blues were rapt to land Threlfall and Quick.
“We have improved under Coley and these two are the icing on the cake to have a red-hot crack at finals,” he said.
