A 24-YEAR-OLD Portland man was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation after his unit caught on fire in Must Street early yesterday morning.
Portland police Sergeant Ray Hastings said the alarm was raised by the resident about 3am.
He said the fire started in the upstairs apartment and burnt through the floor boards.
"There was quite a bit of water damage," he said.
"The occupant, a 24-year-old man, was taken to Portland hospital with smoke inhalation," he said.
The Portland Country Fire Authority brigade attended the scene and put out the fire.
A CFA investigator and Portland police detectives were expected to examine the fire scene in an effort to determine the cause of the fire.
