Warrnambool’s older generation took a step back in time this week when they went for a spin in some of the city’s finest vintage and classic cars.

More than 20 seniors climbed aboard eight cars from the Warrnambool and District Historical Vehicle Club for a day trip into the south-west hinterland.
Passengers were spoilt for choice with a fully-restored Model A Ford, a 1967 Rambler limousine and a 1970 Citroen among the vehicles taking part.
The group first headed to Naringal to explore Smith’s Sawmill, then on to the Timboon Railway Shed Distillery for whiskey tasting and lunch. On the way back to Warrnambool the group stopped in Nullawarre at Danny Blake’s miniature railway.
Archie Graham programs co-ordinator Mary McLeod said the event might be revamped next year to allow more people to take part.
“It’s always very popular,” she said.
Warrnambool and District Historical Vehicle Club member Roy Begelhole brought along his 1970 Citroen DS21 Special for the day, affectionately known as the “cockroach” among his friends for its distinctive looks.
Mr Begelhole has owned the Citroen for about 12 years and has five more in the garage at home.
“You could say I have a soft spot for them,” he said with a laugh.
“We enjoy this day, we never have any problems getting enough cars to take part.”
Fellow group member Ted Drake brought his 1920s Model A Ford, which he has owned for just 12 months.
“It’s 87 years old,” he said. “We just wanted an old car.”
Despite its age, the old Ford runs well and recently took part in a long-distance rally.
Warrnambool’s Sue Gardener and Lyn Lehane were keen to climb aboard the eye-catching Ford.
The car rally event was held as part of Warrnambool’s Celebrage seniors festival.
Other activities to be held as part of the festival include a music session at Warrnambool Art Gallery on Sunday from 2pm and a free road safety seminar at the Archie Graham Community Centre from 10am on October 29.
