His debut solo exhibition is called Forming My Handwriting and showcases his love of abstract forms, bold colours, and vibrant contrasts.
“For the last eight months or so I’ve been juggling (music and painting) at the same time and the lines start blurring between them,” he said.
“They also feed into each other – painting gives me more energy for songwriting and vice versa.”
McLaren, who is now based in Melbourne, said both artforms were about trying to capture feelings floating around.
He cited Australian artist Gareth Sansom and Pablo Picasso as influences, and professed his admiration for modern “Renaissance men” such as David Bowie.
“I’ve never shied away from using lots of colours and contract,” McLaren said.
The exhibition opens on Friday from 5pm with performances by Soda Eaves and Stolen Violin.
McLaren gained national airplay for his album of last year Songs To Greet The Dawn and is working on a follow-up.
