Stratum Star won the $400,000 group 1 Rupert Clarke Stakes on September 26 at his last start, with Lucky Hussler finishing an unlucky sixth in the 1400-metre race.
McLean, foreman for the powerful Darren Weir Warrnambool satellite stable, has overseen the work of both gallopers since he took on the high profile job on August 1.
"It's really hard to split both horses," McLean said.
"They are both very, very good horses.
“Lucky Hussler was held up at a vital time in the Clarke Stakes and he was also checked at the start.
“Lucky Hussler meets Stratum Star better on weights but in saying that you really can't take much away from Stratum Star."
Both horses had their final work out for the Toorak Handicap over 1000 metres at Terang on Wednesday morning with McLean saying their work was sound.
"I really don't think you could have two stablemates going into a group 1 race in better order,” he said.
“My brother Brad rode Stratum Star while Michelle Payne was on Lucky Hussler in the Terang work.
"They both hit the line hard. They were both impressive in the gallop.
“They have drawn good barriers and have champion jockeys in Glen Boss and Craig Williams riding them.
“I suppose it's down to the flip of a coin but I just favour Lucky Hussler."
Weir's other Warrnambool runners on the big 10-race program are Prince Of Penzance, At First Sight and Ygritte.
Ciaron Maher saddles up three runners in group 1 races.
The last-start winner Bon Aurum runs in the $1 million Caulfield Guineas, Akavoroun has drawn a wide barrier in the $400,000 Toorak Handicap while Jameka takes her place in the $500,000 Thousand Guineas.
