PETERBOROUGH is set to get its own festival focused on the foreshore.
The inaugural beachfront festival on Friday, January 11, includes canoe races on the Curdies River for a wide range of ages.
Organiser Christine Norton said boat races had been held on the river at Peterborough many years ago and locals were keen to see them return.
She said the canoe races would have events for 12 to 16 years old, 16 years and over and a masters event for 50 years and over.
Children under 12 will also be catered for with a boogie board triathlon in the Curdies River shallows.
It will involve teams of two paddling boogie boards, then running with balls balanced on the boards, followed by a wheelbarrow race.
“It’s a kids’ twist on a triathlon,” Ms Norton said.
Other festival attractions will include live music, mostly provided by local musicians, a welcome to country ceremony by indigenous performers, a market featuring local produce, food stalls catering for evening meals, children’s rides and activities including a display of birds of prey and a fireworks finale.
Ms Norton said the festival was an opportunity for the local community and holidaymakers to get together.
She said it was hoped to make the beachfront festival an annual event.
