John was one of 18 people chosen from 350 applicants to represent Victoria at the Australian National Fire Cadet Championships, competing in a variety of firefighting challenges.
“It was good to learn new things, like working out how to use the New South Wales trucks, which are a bit different to ours,” the 14-year-old said.
“We didn't know each other or what the events would be, so working with different people as a team and learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses was really good.
“It was fun to go there not knowing anyone but come home with friends.”
John’s Victorian team of six finished first in one of the week’s eight events and placed 19th overall.
