Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEJTR) seasonal risk agronomist Dale Grey said most canola crops in the south-west should get through the heatwave without much damage because their soil moisture was not exhausted.
However they would need further rain to finish off, Mr Grey said.
He said canola crops in the Lake Bolac, Willaura and Ararat areas would be more affected because soil moisture in those areas was much lower than further south.
Mr Grey said canola plantings this year in southern Victoria were about 193,000 hectares, down seven per cent on last year.
Concern about ongoing dry conditions are believed to be among the reasons.
