Warrnambool police’s Senior Constable Emily Durham said about 20 people were called on Monday by a person claiming to be from the ATO.
Residents were told they owed “a couple of thousand dollars and if they didn’t pay within two hours that would be arrested”, Senior Constable Durham said.
She said it appeared the scammers were targeting the region and warned people not to give out any personal details to the callers.
Concerned residents can report the matter to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Scamwatch site (scamwatch.gov.au).
