Members of the Warrnambool and District Orchid Society filled the Warrnambool College hall with breathtaking displays, while Warrnambool Christ Church hosted the annual Festival of Flowers, showcasing colourful arrangements from entries submitted around the district.
The orchid society’s president, Murray Coverdale, said about 300 entries had been received from members from as far away as Cobden, Mortlake and Hamilton.
“Sales have been absolutely magnificent,” he said.
“A lot of plants are going out the door. At the moment we’re rapt with how many people are through the door.
“It’s a challenge to grow orchids and it gets to you. It’s like a disease.
“There’s all sorts that need cool growing, intermediate growing conditions, temperatures from four degrees minimum and then hot growing orchids that need a hothouse to stay about 14 degrees.”
Anglican Parish of Warrnambool secretary Lois McKenzie said the Festival of Flowers, featuring 26 exhibits, is one of the group’s major events, second only to the November 8 fete.
“It’s a very busy time of year because you’ve got to have it when the flowers are at their best and there isn’t too much else on,” she said.
“We’ve got flowers from florists, floral art clubs, district churches and individual entries.
“It gives them a chance to show them off and we always give a donation from the day to a charity.
“The theme this year is ‘lift up your eyes’ and that’s what they seem to be doing. You walk in and everything makes you look up.
“There’s a lot of effort and they’ve got to get inspiration for what they’ve going to do.
“Some of them spend three hours here arranging them.”
The exhibition also featured plant and book stalls, Devonshire tea, a raffle and a performance from the Probus Choir.
