League chief executive officer Mike Farrow declined to release figures to The Standard on Monday but confirmed the Saturday showcase set a new mark.
Farrow said the takings translated to a crowd of about 7000. He was confident the four-week finals series had also set a gate takings record.
Koroit defeated Warrnambool to claim back-to-back senior football premierships for the first time in its history while North Warrnambool Eagles upstaged Camperdown in the A grade netball grand final.
“It’s definitely the biggest crowd I know in my four years in this role and seven years prior to that on the executive,” Farrow said.
“I know the Cobden people left not long after they won their premiership and headed off to celebrate and others came in. Throughout the day, we think there were 7000 people there.”
Farrow said having eight clubs feature in a football or netball match contributed to the success of the day.
“The better club spread definitely helps,” he said.
“It shows for the whole finals series. Even the preliminary final, we had 10 out of 10 clubs still in, two of those clubs didn’t go on to the next stage. But every club had a team in finals up to the preliminary final.”
He was pleased to see footballers courtside for the netball action and vice versa.
“I want to congratulate clubs. If they don’t have a football side in but have a netball side in, or don’t have a netball side in but have a football side in, the way they supported their teammates was great,” he said.
“North Warrnambool Eagles didn’t have a football side in but the representation from them for their netball sides was fantastic.
“The same with Warrnambool. They didn’t have a netball side in but there were netballers supporting their senior football team. That went across the board.”
The Hampden showcase was the fourth south-west grand final day to set a gate takings record this year.
Warrnambool and District league officials were buzzing after one of the most memorable football deciders in years came with an added bonus when cash counts were done.
South West District league grand final day – staged at Melville Oval in Hamilton for the first time – and Mininera and District league grand final day also set new marks.
Farrow heaped praise on his colleagues for their role in the successful season.
“They make my job very rewarding on a personal basis...we’ve got a great executive at the moment,” he said.
