Sex offence charges from 1950s

A BALLARAT man previously involved in a music group which played in Warrnambool has been charged with sex offences.

Darrell Cocking, 77, of Morres Street, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court last week charged with buggery, gross indecency and other sex-related offences involving males.

The allegations date back to the late 1950s.

Offences were allegedly committed in Hawkesdale and Ballarat and Mr Cocking is alleged to have been involved in a music group which also regularly performed in Warrnambool.

Office of Public Prosecutions solicitor Raeleene Maxwell said in court there was a prospect of the charges being resolved.

A request for a suppression order was denied by magistrate Jonathan Klestadt.

A defence solicitor submitted that Mr Cocking wanted to play music at a funeral and a family function and wanted his identity suppressed because he had been assaulted in the past.

The case was adjourned for a committal mention to Ballarat Magistrates Court on October 25.

Mr Cocking lives in Ballarat and is suffering poor health.
