Yambuk buffalo milk turns to gold

SHAW River Buffalo Cheese at Yambuk struck gold at the Brisbane Cheese Awards.

The boutique cheesemaker won a gold award for its fresh buffalo milk mozzarella in the show’s fresh curd textured category and another for its Annie Baxter cheese, a semi-hard Romano style, in the cooked style category.

The Annie Baxter, named after a colourful pioneer of the Yambuk area, has previously won the grand champion cheese award at the Fromage du Monde cheese show in Sydney and gold at several other metropolitan cheese shows.

Shaw River Buffalo Cheese general manager Thea Royal said the company’s stall at a cheese tasting day that followed the show was swamped with hundreds of people wanting to taste the company’s range.

“Winning the award was an amazing compliment but I must say that six hours of cheese tasting and talking to people is such a gratifying thing to do and really reaffirms that we have a very unique and amazing range of products that appeal to a broad range of consumers,” Mrs Royal said.

“I love to watch people’s faces as they approach our table, slightly unsure of what to expect from a buffalo milk cheese, then to see the expressions of pleasure and surprise as they work their way along the tasting table.

“It is really encouraging to see that local produce is being embraced by foodies in all parts of the country, with movements toward farmers’ markets and buying local.”
