Mr Tehan told ABC radio this morning he supported Mr Abbott in the Liberal Party leadership ballot, which was won by Mr Turnbull 54 votes to 44.
In a statement released this morning, Mr Tehan said Prime Minister Turnbull had his total support.
Mr Turnbull is set to be sworn in by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove this morning.
“I congratulate Malcolm Turnbull on becoming Prime Minister of Australia,” the Wannon MP said in a statement. “As the newly elected leader of the Liberal Party, he has my total support.
“I look forward to working as a member of his team and ensuring the electorate of Wannon continues to be served by a government that puts jobs, growth and our future prosperity at the heart of its agenda.”
Mr Turnbull served as Opposition Leader from September 2008 to December 2009, when he was replaced by Mr Abbott.
“Malcolm Turnbull has a broad background across business, law and politics which will stand him in great stead in the office of Prime Minister,” Mr Tehan’s statement read.
“I would like to thank Tony Abbott for his service to Australia and to the Liberal Party. I would also like to thank Margie Abbott and the Abbott family for their contribution to Australian public life.”
