The Dogs own arguably the most changeable side in the Warrnambool and District league, a trait which could prove its worth in the preliminary final at Reid Oval on Saturday.
Sue Fleming’s side takes on a rampant Allansford, which has stormed into the penultimate match with 10 wins from its past 11 matches – including two in finals.
But for all the Cats’ strengths, the Dogs know if plan A fails, plans B and C are easily implemented.
That is no better seen in their attacking end, where tall timber Katie Burt and Lana Keane and the agile Jessica Haberfield provide capable shooting options.
Rebecca Madden, Victoria Davies, Monique Lewis and Sarah Jacobs can rotate through the midcourt while Jacobs can also drop into defence, teaming with Kristie Bolden or Ebony Stacey.
But to reach the decider, where Old Collegians await, Dennington must do something they have yet to achieve this season – beat Allansford.
The Cats scored a narrow 42-38 win at Dennington Recreation Reserve in round 10, a match which proved a turning point of their season. They have won two cut-throat finals already, although the Dogs are likewise battle-hardened.
They prevailed in a one-goal thriller against Kolora-Noorat a fortnight ago and could have upstaged Old Collegians last weekend, if not for the Warriors’ rush of goals late in the last term which broke open the match.
