The Standard understands jobs and course offerings in the School of Communication and Creative Arts are under the microscope as the university prepares a restructure.
The school, attached to the faculty of arts, offers courses in public relations, journalism and children’s literature in Warrnambool.
The full sequence of journalism units are offered at the Warrnambool campus in a mix of online and on-campus studies.
A statement from the university on Friday confirmed restructure considerations were underway.
“If it (the restructure) were to proceed, it would apply to the school’s activities at all four Deakin campuses and no final decision has been made,” the statement said.
“Deakin is consulting all staff about the proposal.
“The proposal does not include immediate changes to courses.”
A spokesman for the university would make no further comment when The Standard questioned him about the potential for staff and course cuts in the future.
Head of Warrnambool campus Gerry Quinn also declined to comment.
The Standard believes the restructure would have no impact on flagship business, nursing, teaching and marine sciences courses.
But the communication and literature courses have added to the diversity of offerings.
Journalism and public relations streams were introduced in 2005 in response to a growing student population.
But student numbers have reportedly declined in recent years, with more courses being made available online.
