Dylan Dean, 28, of Sparks Road, unsuccessfully applied for bail in Warrnambool Magistrates Court.
He will be held in custody for a contest mention on September 22.
Warrnambool police Senior Constable Nick Roberts said he and another officer intercepted Mr Dean driving his Holden Commodore sedan in Warrnambool's Aitkins Road with passenger Cameron Brereton.
A search uncovered a loaded sawn-off shotgun in an open black backpack in the front passenger side footwell. The barrel of the firearm was visible.
Police also found 24 grams of ice worth $24,000 in a small plastic bag jammed into a gap at the bottom of the steering wheel, a working taser, $1075 in cash in Mr Dean's right trouser pocket, eight shotgun cartridges in the backpack, half-a-gram of ice in the passenger side door and three mobile phones.
A spot test on the drugs returned positive to ice.
Mr Dean said he was a heavy ice user, buying ice in "eight balls".
He said he used 1.75 grams of ice each day, costing him $450 and equating to a weekly habit costing $3000. A check of the phones revealed a picture of an ice “rock” and text messages.
Mr Dean is unemployed and receives Centrelink benefits. He denied knowledge of the firearm and taser in his vehicle.
He was released from prison on parole in November after about five months in jail for trafficking ice. He completed parole on June 26.
The Department of Corrections said Mr Dean had returned four positive drug screens to ice.
Police suspect he trafficked the drug while on parole, which could trigger more time in jail.
Geelong police executed a warrant at Mr Dean's home a week after his arrest and another sawn-off shotgun and ammunition was recovered.
