Hamilton police Sergeant Paul Stanhope said the family violence incident started about 11am on Thursday involving the man and his mother.
He was remanded in custody overnight by a bail justice to appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Friday charged with causing criminal damage and making threats.
The man was verbally aggressive at their Duke Avenue home, it's then alleged he consumed cannabis and punched a hole in a door which led to his mother leaving the home for a couple of hours to let him calm down.
When she returned about 2pm the son said she was lucky he didn't kill her and he mentioned a knife.
He then demanded prescription medication his mother used for her heart condition but she left the home and he followed screaming.
The woman then collapsed and blacked out.
She remembers being taken to hospital and the incident unfolded in the street just after 3.30pm as school children were going home.
When arrested the man failed to co-operate with police.
In other crime overnight, a Warrnambool accounting firm in Hider Street was broken into early Friday.
Offenders attempted to gain entry by forcing open a door and then got in through a window.
An audible alarm was activated at 3.20am and the offenders fled.
Nothing was damaged or stolen.
Warrnambool-based crime scene officers will attend on Friday morning to examine the building for forensic evidence.
