The shortage of rain in August contributed significantly to the month being part of Hamilton’s seventh driest winter.
The Hamilton research farm received only 31.2 millimetres during August, or 37 per cent of its long term August average.
The total rainfall received this year at the Hamilton research farm until September 1 was 392.6mm, compared to the average of 449.9 mm.
The lower than average rainfall to date comes after an even lower total at the same time last year and close to the lower than average falls received up to September in 2013.
This year’s winter rainfall total was 164.2 mm compared to the long term average of 234.6 mm.
