The Western District ladies team this week competed in the Country Teams Golf Championships in Melbourne.
The team played in division one and enjoyed success, finishing runners-up to the South Western team.
The win was even more meritorious given the Western District team stepped up this year from playing in division two in 2014.
While this result was an impressive one, team captain Debbie Rix said the players were looking for bigger things ahead.
“To come from division two and finish runners-up in division one was a really good effort,” Rix said.
“At the official presentation they gave us a special mention which was a nice acknowledgement.
“It was great to show we can play on these tough Melbourne courses and against the best players from across the state and match it with them.
“But we don’t want to leave it at this, the attitude amongst the team is that we definitely see this is a starting point, we want to come back next year and go one better.”
The 10-player squad included Debbie Rix (Cobden), Alison Sinclair (Warrnambool), Jo Flaherty, Di Robinson, Anne Dwyer (Port Fairy), Libby Lewis, Sue Walter (Hamilton), Marion Venn (Terang), Elle Zeunert, Sandy Stewart (Portland).
The championships started on Monday with Western District up against the Golf Central team from Bendigo at Spring Valley Golf Club. Western District won 4.5 to 2.5.
On Tuesday at Settlers Run Golf Club the Western District team defeated North Eastern 4.5 to 2.5 in the morning.
In the afternoon they were up against Mornington Peninsula, a contest they won 5.2.
On Wednesday morning the action moved to Victoria Golf Club in what was essentially a grand final against a South Western team that had two wins and draw.
In an evenly contested match South Western won 4 to 3. Joanna Flaherty defeated Adele Huggard 2 and 1, Debbie Rix defeated Wendy Tottenham 4 and 3, Libby Lewis lost to Kathy Dellar 2 and 1, Sandy Stewart lost to Alisha Jamieson 2 and 1, Diana Robinson defeated Jenny Edmanson 2 up, Alison Sinclair lost to Emma Zahl 5 and 3 and Marion Venn lost to Kathy Bell 4 and 3.
With the best players from around Victoria converging on Melbourne for the annual championships the standard of play was very high.
That is evident in the quality of players that represented the Western District. All players in the squad have handicaps under 10 with the best being Joanna Flaherty who plays off 0.6.
