The Roosters midfielder is eyeing a win – their fifth of the year – against Hamilton Kangaroos at Friendly Societies’ Park on Saturday.
“We have been in a similar situation the last few years, very slowly building,” Thompson said.
“This year we’ve taken a few steps forward but there is a still a bit to go between us and the good sides.”
Thompson, 27, plans to play at South Warrnambool again next season.
He is eager to see the club capitalise on its enviable list of teenage up-and-comers.
“They won it (the under 18 flag) last year so there is definitely a bit of talent there, we just need more experience to go with it,” Thompson said.
Roosters coach Nigel Kol will step aside at the end of the season.
