Hoy, 18, collected the Mike Hamblin Medal after polling 22 votes at City Memorial Bowls Club on Wednesday night. He finished ahead of South Rovers’ Matthew Wood, who finished with 20.
Hoy, a former Warrnambool junior who crossed to Nirranda last year, said he was shocked to poll so well.
“I’m pretty surprised, it’s nice to have it really. You’re not worried about it but it’s a nice little achievement.”
Hoy had six votes at the halfway mark but increasingly caught the attention of umpires thereafter. He picked up 14 votes in his last seven matches, including two in round 18 – coincidentally against South Rovers.
“I was pretty happy with my own season. I had a slow start but I got a bit more consistent later on in the year,” he said. “I sneaked up forward a bit more later on in the year and kicked a few goals, which helped out.”
