South Warrnambool had its biggest win of the season when it defeated Cobden 31.12 (198) to 11.13 (79).
Exciting teenager Kyden Jarvis was the star for the Roosters, kicking eight goals playing as both an onballer and forward. Jarvis was one of many youngsters who South Warrnambool coach Nigel Kol spoke highly of after the game.
“Kyden has missed a lot of footy with appendicitis,” Kol said.
“In the game before he got crook earlier in the year he played some really good footy and he was back to that form today. He played really well and so did all our boys today, I thought going into the game if we brought our best today then we were a chance.
“But I still had butterflies because with so many kids playing you are not sure what they will bring to the table.
“But they were fantastic today, our kids gave us so much energy and as a coaching staff we are chaffed for them to get a result like this.
“As a club we think our junior development program is in great shape and we will continue to roll with that and keep putting games into these kids.”
Kol praised the performance of onballer Jock Blair and wingman Jake O’Sullivan who were both prominent players. Key forward Scott Maddern also had a big impact on the result, kicking five goals. For the Bombers youngster Jonathon Benallack kicked four goals while ruckman Ash Rohan continued his strong season. Cobden was competitive early and trailed by just nine points at quarter-time before the Roosters produced a 12-goal second quarter to blow the game away. They didn’t take the foot of the pedal, dominating the second half which yielded 14 goals to the Bombers four. It was the Roosters fifth win for the season with winnable games against Portland and Hamilton Kangaroos to finish the season.
Koroit continues to score heavily with a 22.18 (150) to 4.9 (33) win over Portland at Victoria Park. It was party time again for the Saints star forward Sam Dobson who kicked eight goals, making it 26 from his last three outings.
For the Tigers coach Luke Crane showed his class, kicking three of his teams four goals.
Koroit coach Adam Dowie was not only happy with the form of his own team but was also generous in his praise of the opposition.
“We had a bit to play for, at the start of the day we spoke about the chance to get top spot if we could win and Warrnambool lost and that is how it turned out,” Dowie said.
“One thing about Portland is they take the game on and try and score, they don’t push numbers back. That did allow us a bit of space to work with but credit to Portland, they are trying to play a Hampden league game style the way they move the ball. They are heading in the right direction.”
