The 31-year-old German holds a seven-second lead over tour favourite, New Zealander Patrick Bevan, heading into Thursday’s stage three 137-kilometre road race from Mount Gambier to Port MacDonnell. Schweizer is making his first racing visit to Australia and is confident of holding the leaders jersey until tours end.
Ballarat’s Patrick Shaw, riding for the Avanti team, took opening stage honours in a fast paced crietrium in Mount Gambier on Wednesday morning.
He edged out his team mates Bevan and Scott Law completing an Avanti trifecta. In the stage two road race around the city’s famous blue lake, Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Budget Forklifts team member Scott Sutherland took stage honours. He finished ahead of Schweizer and Raphael Freienstein.
