He hinted at Monday night’s council meeting that city chief executive Bruce Anson had been one of the recent victims.

Inquiries later by The Standard ascertained that Mr Anson had to replace tyres which wore out prematurely on rough roads and had wheel rims badly damaged.

“In light of the damage done to Mr Anson’s car and talk of class action against VicRoads, could we have a register at the council offices to record damages and injuries caused by bad road conditions?” Cr Hulin suggested.

Earlier this month Macedon Ranges Shire Council released a list of VicRoads-managed roads in the shire in a bid to encourage residents to report repair issues to the right authority.

Romsey-based Cr Joe Morabito said people should take class action against VicRoads for damages caused on roads it managed.

“If we need to get out there and convene a protest, then I will,” Cr Morabito was quoted as saying.

Warrnambool tyre dealers have been kept busy replacing damaged tyres and rims, often with bills of several hundred dollars.

In some cases where a rare wheel is damaged beyond repair motorists have had to buy a whole new matching set. 

Beaurepaire’s manager Peter Baulch said several motorists had asked for letters verifying the damage so they could make a claim on VicRoads.

According to VicRoads regional director William Tieppo motorists are  entitled to make a compensation claim, but payments will only be made if negligence is proven.

“In accordance with the Road Management Act 2004 VicRoads will only be liable where it does not meet its requirements under its road management plan or certain other policies relating to the management of its road network,”  he said.

“Anyone wishing to claim for damages from VicRoads is required to complete a notice of incident form which can be found on the VicRoads website.”
