Timboon’s Arthur Finch and Warrnambool’s Maureen Drennan are celebrating wins in the Victorian Indoor Bias Bowls Association’s champions of champions event.
Finch defeated Sean Ingram in the men’s final 30-14 while Drennan held out Jodie Jones 21-15 in the women’s decider. Both were country-versus-city encounters at Sunshine on Sunday.
The champion of champions wins mark the end of an undefeated run by the pair, who booked their tickets to Melbourne by winning their respective association titles – Heytesbury and Warrnambool.
Remarkably, both won their singles’ sections at the Victorian Inter-Region Championships at Ballarat in June, with their latest success giving them a memorable double.
That could become a treble when they represent Victoria in singles at national championships later in Warrnambool from August 24 to 30.
The weekend double has continued a bountiful year for south-west indoor bowlers at state level – potentially one of the best on record.
Drennan teamed with Koroit’s Jacinta Marney to prevail in the Victorian women’s pairs a week earlier while Woolsthorpe’s George Draffen took out the men’s singles in June. Koroit’s Brendan Keane, Shane Cashill, Debbie Keane and Marney were also successful in the mixed fours to start the season.
