The Geelong-based university merged with the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education (WIAE) in August 1990 as part of tertiary education reforms spearheaded by Education Minister John Dawkins.
Deakin Warrnambool campus head Gerry Quinn said the university had grown considerably since the 1990 amalgamation.
“Back in 1990, Deakin was solely a Geelong institution but now its grown to become a university for all of western Victoria,” Professor Quinn said. “I remember some who graduated in 1990 received degrees with under both the Deakin and WIAE banners.”
The tertiary institution started life as the WIAE in 1970 under David Roach as director. The institute was originally based in Timor Street but gradually shifted to Sherwood Park from 1976. Deakin University was established in Geelong in 1974.
