The bottom-placed Tigers pushed the Bloods to the wire before going down 11.13 (79) to 10.7 (67) at Terang Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
Portland coach Luke Crane said the undermanned Tigers showed fight.
They took a seven-point lead into quarter-time and extended their buffer to 13 at the main break. Scores were level at three-quarter-time.
Crane, who kicked four goals but missed an easy shot in the frenetic final term, said the Tigers’ team work was pleasing.
“Every player contributed and that’s what I have been harping on about all year,” he said.
Terang Mortlake assistant coach Chris Bant said the Bloods overused the football.
“Most of our forwards had their opponents for size. Steve Staunton was at centre half-forward all day and we were not kicking it to him,” he said.
