The Seagulls were beaten but brave in the 10-point loss to the reigning premiers.
Port Fairy coach Brett Evans said his team’s two quarters with the wind were its downfall.
“In the first quarter we let them clear the ball too easily from their backline,” Evans said.
“We held them well in the second quarter but in the third we let ourselves down when we overused the ball, their pressure was good and we had too many handballs.
“I thought that was where we lost the game, the boys played really well in the last but we just couldn’t get it close enough to have a decent shot on goal.”
Daniel Nicholson was a standout for the Seagulls, kicking three goals including goal of the day from 50 metres out on the boundary in the third quarter.
Michael Sheehan was lively in his 200th game while ruckman Tom French was a good contributor in his first senior game for the Seagulls.
