Brauer College’s year 11 students on Friday handed over unwanted clothing to the Koroit Street Red Cross shop, as part of the charity organisation’s winter woolies appeal. It took just three weeks for the high school to collect more bags of warm clothes than it could count. Student Ruby McFadden, 17, said the school hoped to help Red Cross more often.

“It turned bigger than we expected it to be,” she said.

“We wanted to help because of the great work Red Cross does locally and worldwide.”

Ruby said students were more than happy to contribute to the cause.

“As a teenager you end up having too many clothes,” she said. “This is all from just one year level so more than 100 people pitched in.”

Red Cross life member and shop volunteer Phyllis Vaughan said the annual collection scheme helped those caught in the winter cold.

“It’s given the students an idea of what they can do to help,” she said.
