So it shouldn’t be surprising that property tycoon Donald Trump has become a front-runner in the race for the White House.
His arrogance, his conspicuous wealth and his outlandish hairdo would almost disqualify him from becoming Australian prime minister.
However, the latest opinion polls put him as a leading contender to clinch the nomination for his centre-right Republican Party. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Hillary Clinton is all but assured as the Democratic Party nominee.
It’s early days with the US presidential election scheduled for November 2016. Trump faces a Melbourne Cup field and has been hampered by his racist comments regarding Mexicans.
It may be easy to dismiss Trump as a fool but the USA has thrown up some unlikely contenders for president in the past.
Remember Ronald Reagan?
