The 69-year-old former Deakin University lecturer was preparing to show works from his career, some he completed half a century ago.

‘‘It’s a survey show, right from when I was 20 years old right up until now,’’ he said. ‘‘I’m shattered, completely shattered.

“Many of the works have been destroyed. There were some very special works.’’

Mr Wilkins said the burglary happened on Sunday while he was staying at a friend’s home.

‘‘During the break-in a number of art works to be exhibited were smashed and part of the house was ransacked,’’ he said.

‘‘I’m in a bit of a crisis, some of my major works have been damaged. I’ve been working towards the exhibition for almost two years.

‘‘The person who has broken in has had a bit of a party. It’s obvious drugs were involved.

‘‘This was an important exhibition for me, it could be my last. I’m devastated.’’

The retired visual arts lecturer said the exhibition of about 50 pieces would go ahead despite up to 10 works being damaged or destroyed.

He said he had talked with Warrnambool Art Gallery curator Gareth Colliton about storing works in the lead-up to the exhibition.

‘‘Some of the works were thrown against a wall, others were just smashed with a rock – sculptures and ceramics.

‘‘Most of the pieces were my own but some I had bought from other people, mostly well-known locals.

‘‘It’s the last thing I wanted to happen. It’s lucky I was not here. I’m sure there would have been violence. It’s left me a bit paranoid. He could come back.’’

The exhibition Developed: the art of John Wilkins is scheduled to open at the Warrnambool Art Gallery on August 19.
